Bushmills recently announced it’s celebrating the release of the distillery’s third expression in their Rare Cask series, a 30 Year Old Single Malt finished in Madeira casks.
A statement from Bushmills explains that this rare single malt was triple distilled on Oct. 31st, 1991, where it was then aged in hand-selected bourbon and sherry casks for 13 years and four months. From there, it was blended and continued its maturation in three first-fill Madeira wine casks in February of 2005.
The third expression in the Rare Cask series, it’s the second under the care of newly-appointed master blender, Alex Thomas.

Bushmills, a 400-year-old single malt distillery, uses 100 percent Irish barley and their traditional Irish copper pots to make this special whisky, along with hand-selected casks for aging. It’s non-chill filtered and bottled at a cask strength of 49% ABV, which helps provide maximum depth of flavor.
The 30 Year Old Finished in Madeira Casks has a suggested retail price of $999.99.
The distiller’s notes show that the 30 Year Old has a nose of roasted walnuts, creme brulee, and baked peaches mixed with sweet notes of hazelnut and orange marmalade.
The palate has a soft texture that offers notes of fresh pralines and toffee, before revealing sweet and dark chocolate, orange peel, and molasses. It finishes long with sweet vanilla bean and mocha flavors.
