Holiday Gift Guide 2022, Best Small-Batch Limited Edition Spirits

The bourbon, whiskey, and rum lovers in your life will very much appreciate the gift of a small batch spirit this holiday season. The term small batch is very loosely defined as blending the contents of a select number of barrels to achieve a specific, if not unique flavor profile. Indeed, some “batches” are much smaller than others, but the spirits listed below have done their homework in terms of crafting an original blend that will surprise and delight the spirits lover on your list.

Hibiki Blossom Harmony: This blended Japanese whisky delivers the kind of balance and precision that define the House of Suntory’s blending style. This one is an intriguing blend of various malt and grain whiskies from House of Suntory’s Yamazaki, Hakushu and Chita distilleries. It gets finished in Sakura casks for an added layer of flavor complexity. $160

Castle & Key Distillery Small Batch Wheated Bourbon: This is the first wheated bourbon to be released from the distillery since restoring the former Old Taylor Distillery in 2014. Sweeter and smoother on the palate, this expression shows notes of caramel, allspice, chocolate and sweet tea. Delicious on the rocks or in a cocktail. 59.99

Procera Green Dot Gin: This African gin is a single botanical expression crafted to celebrate the essence of juniper. Distilled only with botanicals from the extraordinary African juniper tree, (berries, foliage and toasted wood), it shows a unique and distinctive creamy palate and flavor profile that makes it suitable as a martini or blended into a cocktail. It’s worth noting that most gins are distilled with dried juniper, this gin is only made with fresh, locally sourced African juniper. $119.50

Starward Limited Edition Vitalis: This special bottling celebrates the distillery’s 15-year anniversary. A blend of select expressions from six different types of barrels including tawny, rum, bourbon and apera— all specifically chosen and carefully blended to create a multifaceted yet perfectly balanced, fruit forward spirit. $150.00

Jefferson’s Ocean Aged at Sea® New York Limited Edition: This rich, flavorful bourbon spent time aging at sea—enduring the dramatic temperature shifts as the barrels traveled from the North Sea to Europe, along the Atlantic Seaboard and down to the Panama Canal. When the barrels finished their voyage, they arrived at Manhattan’s first distillery since prohibition, where New York water was used to cut the bourbon to 98 proof. $99

Woodford Reserve Limited Edition Honey Barrel Finish: The experimenting continues at this legendary distillery. This time Master Distiller Chris Morris partnered with a local beekeeper to craft the limited edition honey barrel finish. The result is a gentle, soft bourbon with floral and toasty notes including honey suckle, lemon peel, toasted coconut and honey graham cracker. $59.99

Filmland Spirits Ryes of the Robots: Movie buffs will appreciate the colorful, B-movie poster styled labels and cinematically themed expressions from Filmland. The rye is one of their best, aged four years in American white oak barrels, it shows baking spice notes of cinnamon and clove and a long chocolatey finish with subtle hints of oak. Delicious, and the over-the-top label makes the bottle look great on any bar cart. $59.99

Kasama Small Batch Rum: This unique Philippine rum crafted from freshly pressed noble cane juice was aged seven years in American oak barrels. Sultry notes of vanilla, butterscotch and pineapple make it a good choice for sipping. The brand partnered with Filipino-American fashion designer, Josie Natori, to create a bottle enveloped in the vines and flowers of Natori’s signature Chikayo print, and 25% of proceeds benefit Voice of the Free, an organization that works to end human trafficking in the Philippines. $31.99

OMAGE XO California Cognac: A small-batch California version made in the style of Cognac—and meant to fill what spirits industry veteran Julious Grant believes is a void in America’s ultra-premium brandy market. The XO brings together select California varietals and barrel-aging to, as Grant explains it, “pay homage to Cognac’s history and artistry, while showing what’s possible with American grapes.” Aged six years in American bourbon barrels, the palate is rich with fruit notes of dried apricot, jasmine and honeysuckle, and it ends with a marvelous caramel finish. $89

Glenmorangie “A Tale of the Forest,” Limited Edition Whisky: Barley gets special treatment for this expression, kilned with woodland botanicals, including juniper berries, birch bark and heather flowers—and a wee bit of peat for that authentic woodsy mojo. The exotic label is the genius of Thai illustrator Pomme Chan, whose technicolor dreamscape mirrors the dance of flavors in this expression, think zesty herbal and perfumed top notes to peppermint, menthol, bitter orange and a hint of aromatic wood smoke. $102.99

Five Trail Blended America Whiskey Batch 002: The newest iteration from Five Trail is Batch 002, which builds complexity with a blend of 4-year Indiana wheated bourbon, 4-year Kentucky four grain bourbon, 6-year Colorado single malt, and 12-year Kentucky bourbon. A bit of Rocky Mountain water cuts it to proof and the final result is a spirit with notes of ginger, toffee, caramel and a thread of smoke. $79.99

Dragon’s Milk Origin Small Batch: Bourbon lovers will appreciate this award-winning expression and the fact that it gets distilled in a one-of-a-kind Prohibition Era Pot Still, and that it is distilled in batches of 100 barrels or less. The decadent palate shows notes of orange peel, caramel and allspice. $44.99

Basil Hayden Red Wine Cask Finish: Partially aged in Californian red wine casks, this limited release is a great option for Basil Hayden lovers who will appreciate the chance to taste something new from the brand. This one sits right on the fence between smooth and fruity, delivers a smooth, easy-drinking flavor profile that makes it a nice fit for cocktails or casual evening by the fire. $59.99
