Mike Bednostin’s 21 points lead Trinity past rival Middletown 66-51

Trinity came into Friday’s contest against Middletown looking for a sliver of revenge after the Blue Raiders eliminated the Rocks in the 2022 District 3 playoffs a year ago.

They got that, and added some more spice to a budding rivalry at the end, topping the Blue Raiders 66-51, moving to 7-2 on the season.

The stars

6-foot-11 senior center Mike Bednostin came to play early, dominating the offensive glass on his way to a 21-point performance. Owen Schlager also chipped in with 13, while Trey Weiand and Reece Brown each had 9.

Mason Blazer led the way for Middletown with 23 points. Braelan Huber had 7, and Landon Keyser had 9 for the Blue Raiders as well.

Game-deciding plays

A 3-pointer by Huber late in the fourth had cut a lead that was once nearing the 20s to 7 for the Blue Raiders, but the Shamrocks were able to hit enough free throws late and get enough stops to control the contest at the end.

But some drama ensued at the closing second, with Schlager driving down and dunking despite Middletown having conceded the contest. Middletown’s bench did not appreciate the slam with several players exchanging words with Trinity after.

Safe to say, the contest at Middletown on January 31 will be a juicy one.

They said it

“I wasn’t here last year, and coaches told me that they lost in the semifinals of the District championships to [Middletown]. And I took it personal. I wanted to stand up for my coach. I came in with the mindset to rebound the ball as much as I can and play aggressively.”– Trinity center Mike Bednostin on his mindest in the game as a bigger player against a smaller team

“The silver lining is I saw our guys play really tough. I saw all our guys emotional. I saw our guys play hard. I saw our guys play physical, the right way not dirty. I saw a good basketball game here tonight that we want to fix the result of.”– Middletown head coach Chris Bradford on positives to take away from the game
