Kentucky’s Michter’s Distillery is releasing its most expensive whiskey yet.
It’s the 2022 Edition of Michter’s Celebration Sour Mash that will begin shipping in February for a suggested retail price of $6,000 a bottle.
Louisville-based Michter’s was recently named the World’s Most Admired American Whiskey in an international poll conducted by UK-based “Drinks International.”
Michter’s originally meant to release it late last year but supply chain issues held up the swanky packaging.
Why is Michter’s Celebration Sour Mash so expensive?
So, besides the fancy box, what makes this rare whiskey so special?
According to the company, it’s the fourth Celebration release and the first one since 2019. When Celebration Sour Mash Whiskey was originally released in 2013, it was the first time an American whiskey company put out a new bottle priced at several thousand dollars, the most premium of of premium whiskeys.
“It’s been gratifying to see how whiskeys made in the United States have garnered increased respect and recognition both at home and abroad over the past decade,” stated Michter’s President Joseph J. Magliocco.
Now they’re topping themselves with an even pricier version. And only 328 bottles of this rare edition will be released.
It’s 112.8 proof, a blend of seven barrels of whiskey selected by master distiller Dan McKee, three Kentucky straight bourbon and four Kentucky straight rye. The barrels range in age from 12 years to over 30 year sold.
“This whiskey is an exploratory journey of aged bourbons and ryes blended to perfection that leaves your palate captivated with its bold elegance. I am thrilled with this release and very proud of the Michter’s team and our efforts to produce the best American Whiskey,” said Michter’s Master of Maturation Andrea Wilson in a statement.
