Sip up and listen! A whisky festival is coming to Canberra this weekend

Posted on

The team at Whisky Capital have your Saturday plans sorted, bringing over 16 whiskies to Canberra and a whisky gelato!

Founder of Whisky Flights and Whisky Capital, Travis Lawrie is a whisky lover and after getting to know a range of distillers from travelling to events in places like Sydney and Melbourne, he decided it was time for Canberra to have its own whisky festival in conjunction with one of our favourite’s Farrah Liquor Collective. Thus, Whisky Capital was born, an event for whisky lovers to indulge in their shared passion at the Novotel Canberra this Saturday 4 February.

“It’s a great chance to explore an amazing range of Australian distilleries and we have some New Zealand and even Scottish ones as well,” explains Travis. “Because we’ve got quite a variety of distilleries coming along on the day there will be something for everyone to enjoy.”

Travis explains that at Whisky Capital, drinks range from the traditional to the quirky. Ever tried an apple pie, peach iced tea or coffee flavoured whisky? These flavours are the brainchild of local company Cheers Mate—because what would a Canberra whisky event be without some locally-made spirits?

Keep an eye out for the Cheers Mate team on the day who make whisky strength cocktails in a bottle and are huge advocates for mental health in hospitality.

Another local to keep an eye out for is the two-person team from Riverbourne Distillery. Located just over the border in New South Wales, Riverbourne Distiller makes regular appearances in the Canberra market scene and you may have even glimpsed them at the Haigh Park Village Markets or the Old Bus Depot Markets.

Love being the first to try something? Craft Works, a boutique distillery from Capertree, New South Wales, will be releasing a new whisky on the day for everyone to sample.

Naturally, you’re going to need some food, and catering will be provided by the team from First Edition restaurant and bar, offering up a range of canapés and other goodies and when it comes to sweets Jasper and Myrtle, purveyors of locally-made chocolate, have whipped up a cool treat for the event, with two exclusive gelatos up for grabs.

“They’ve made both a whisky and a rum gelato for everyone to enjoy,” says Travis and honestly, we can’t wait.

Whisky Capital will be held across two three-hour ticketed sessions, from 1 pm until 4 pm and from 5 pm to 8 pm. Tickets are $159 but we have been given a cheeky discount code so you can get $20 off for your ticket (thank us later). Just use the code HerCanberra to save some money that can then be put towards buying a bottle (or two) of whatever new favourite you find.

Tickets also include entry to Whisky Capital’s three-hour session, a Glencairn whisky nosing glass, canapés and other food by the team at First Edition restaurant and bar, a water bottle, event booklet, carry bag and free access to masterclasses with the distillers.
