Tamdhu’s Quercus Alba Distinction II Celebrates American Oak Sherry Cask Maturation

Tamdhu Speyside Single Malt recently announced the second bottling in its Quercus Alba Distinction series.

Tamdhu is known to fully mature all of its single malt whisky in Oloroso Sherry casks, as they are dedicated to this maturation style. And this new expression, Distinction II, is a celebration of American oak Sherry casks in particular.

A statement from Tamdhu explains that this new whisky’s journey started in the North American oak forests before being imported into Spain, with the oak crafted into casks in Spain’s “Sherry Triangle” over the course of six years.

During this period, the staves air dry in the Mediterranean sun before being assembled and toasted by coopers. Oloroso Sherry seasoning then takes place before the casks are ready to make their way back to Speyside in Scotland.

The distiller’s notes show that on the nose, Quercus Alba Distinction II delivers aromas of malt, vanilla, and spiced oak, along with oranges and fresh mint. The palate brings damson plums and dark chocolate tastes. The finish is prolonged with sherried oak giving way to figs, golden syrup, and baked crumble.

Sandy McIntyre, Tamdhu’s distillery manager, said they’re dedicated to sherry casks at Tamdhu, and their Distinction series allows them to take an even closer look at how American oak Sherry maturation impacts their whisky.

“Distinction II has a wonderfully nuanced profile that’s noticeable when compared to our European oak bottlings while still retaining that classic Tamdhu style,” he added. “A fruity palate, indulgent mouthfeel, soft oak, and unmistakable hints of sherry.”

Bottled at 48% ABV, Tamdhu Quercus Alba Distinction II has a suggested retail price of £67.99 and is available through specialist retailers in the UK, U.S., Germany, Netherlands, Asia and Australia.
