Baby, it’s cold outside, and having nice hot winter drinks on a cold night is just the ticket. Here are some great recipes to help you stay warm this holiday season!
Brenda’s Hot Toddy
Brenda Clouston of COLT Grill in Prescott Valley and Prescott loves to make a classic and delicious Hot Toddy when it’s chilly out and now she shares her favorite winter warm-up with you!
Ingredients
- 2 tbls. Bourbon
- 1 tbls. honey
- 2 tsp. fresh lemon juice
- 1/4 cup boiling hot water
- Chamomile tea bag
Directions
Pour the Bourbon, honey, and lemon juice in a 6oz mug.
Brew chamomile tea in a separate mug and pour over the Bourbon, honey, and lemon juice mixture.
Stir until the honey is melted. Enjoy!
Tom and Jerry
Ingredients
- Boiling water, to rinse
- 1 oz dark rum
- 1 oz cognac
- 1 TBSP Tom & Jerry Batter (*recipe below)
- Whole milk, hot, to top
Garnish
- Freshly grated nutmeg
- Ground cloves
- Ground allspice
Directions
Rinse a small coffee mug (or white ceramic Tom & Jerry Cup) with boiling water to warm, then discard the water.
Add the rum, cognac, and batter into the cup and top with hot milk.
Garnish with a mixture of 2 parts freshly grated nutmeg to 1 part each ground clove and ground allspice.
Savor the yumminess!
*Tom & Jerry Batter: Separate 12 egg yolks and white and set aside. In a glass or ceramic bowl, whip the egg whites with 1 tsp of cream of tartar until stiff peaks form. In a separate bowl, beat the yolks with 2 pounds of sugar, 2 oz of dark rum, and 1 tsp vanilla ex

Hot Buttered Rum
Ingredients
Batter
- 2/3 cup brown sugar
- 1/2 cup (1 stick) unsalted butter
- 1/4 cup honey
- 1 tsp ground cinnamon
- 1/2 tsp freshly ground nutmeg
- 1/4 tsp ground cloves
- pinch of salt
- 1 tsp pure vanilla
Cocktail
- 2/3 cup hot water
- 2 TBSP (1 oz) batter, plus more to taste
- 2 oz dark rum
- Whipped cream (garnish)
- Ground nutmeg (garnish
Directions for Batter:
Combine brown sugar, butter, honey, cinnamon, nutmeg, cloves, and salt in a small saucepan over medium heat. Stir frequently until the butter is completely melted and sugar is dissolved, about 5 minutes. Remove from heat and stir in vanilla.
Instructions for Cocktail
Combine the hot water with the batter in a mug. Stir briskly until combined. Add rum and stir. Add additional batter to taste.
Garnish with whipped cream and freshly grated nutmeg and serve hot!
Irish Coffee
Ingredients
- 8 oz. fresh brewed hot coffee
- 1 TBSP brown sugar
- 1.5 oz Irish Whiskey
- Heavy cream, lightly whipped
Directions
Preheat serving mug by filling with hot water. Empty water from mug and fill 3/4 full with very hot coffee.
Add brown sugar and stir until dissolved.
Add Irish whiskey and stir gently.
Pour lightly whipped cream slowly over the back of a spoon onto the coffee being careful not to break the coffee’s surface. Alternate option to finish: whip the cream a bit more to soft peaks and add a dollop on top of coffee.
Serve hot and enjoy!
Hot Spiced Cider
Ingredients
- 1 Gal. apple cider
- 1/4 cup light brown sugar
- 1 tsp allspice
- 1/8 tsp grated nutmeg
- 2 tsp whole cloves
- 1 orange
- Cinnamon sticks (for garnish)
Directions
Heat apple cider in a large pot over medium heat. Stir in brown sugar, nutmeg, and allspice until sugar dissolves. Bring to low boil.
Stud the orange with whole cloves until the surface of the orange is covered. Add clove-studded orange to apple cider mixture and reduce heat. Cover and simmer for 15 to 20 minutes.
Serve hot cider in pre-warmed mugs – fill mugs with very hot water, then empty water before filling with cider.
For a “spiked” hot spiced cider, add 1.5 oz. bourbon to each mug.
